NAACP and Family of Nygil Cullins demand answers for his shooting death in Atlanta.
A protest led by the family of Nygil Cullins and the NAACP took place outside Fogo de Chão, marking the 10-month anniversary since Cullins was fatally shot by an Atlanta police officer. According to reports, Cullins was in the midst of a mental health crisis when he caused a disturbance in the restaurant, leading to Atlanta Police being called to the scene. While attempting to arrest Cullins, a struggle with security ensued and a weapon discharged, striking the security guard. The officers responded by shooting Cullins.
After reviewing security footage and body camera videos, the family and the NAACP expressed concerns about the excessive use of force. The video reportedly shows multiple shots fired into Cullins's body on two separate occasions while he was on the ground. Georgia NAACP President Gerald Griggs questioned "why the officer fired at least five more shots into Cullins's body after he was down and most likely restrained." The family demands accountability from the police department, including a meeting with the Fulton County District Attorney to discuss the shooting.
The Fulton County District Attorney is currently reviewing the Atlanta Police Shooting, and the family and NAACP are requesting a thorough and impartial investigation. They have raised concerns about the response time of the police department and the use of excessive force, and are seeking answers and justice for Nygil Cullins's death.
